Terry Labonte began his racing career by driving quarter-midgets in Texas in 1964. Louisana car owner Billy Hagan worked out a deal with Labonte to run his first Winston Cup race, in the 1978 Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway. He qualified 19th and finished a surprising fourth.
Labonte won his first Cup Series title for Hagan in 1984. Although he only won two races that season, he racked up an impressive 24 top-10 finishes in 30 starts.
Labonte joined Hendrick Motorsports in 1994. Labonte went on to win his second Cup championship in 1996, again only winning two races, but logging 21 top-five finishes in 31 starts. Labonte won the final Labor Day Weekend Mountain Dew Southern 500 on Aug. 31, 2003, at Darlington Raceway – his first win since 1999.
Labonte won The Winston all-star race in 1999 and the Busch Clash in 1985. He also was the International Race of Champions (IROC) series winner in 1989.
Labonte and brother Bobby started on the front row in the 1998 Daytona 500, the only time that brothers shared the front row for that event. Terry and Bobby are also the only pair of brothers ever to win the Cup championship.
Since 2005, Labonte has continued to drive occasionally in the Sprint Cup Series. He joined forces with FAS Lane Racing and C&J Energy in 2011, where he competed in eight races. In 2012, Labonte started four races with a best finish of 16th in the fall event at Talladega Superspeedway.
In 2013, Labonte once again teams up with FAS Lane Racing to compete in at least all four restrictor plate races with the support of C&J Energy Services.
